Free Patterns

The Snowflake Patterns begin simply and increase in complexity.  The designs can be completed with scissors and a paper punch.

Patterns are provided as a way for you to increase your skills.  I am looking forward to seeing the designs you create!

Part of the fun is not knowing what the snowflake looks like until you unfold it!  I am torn on whether or not to spoil the suprise for you . . . For now, most of the patterns below will not have a finished product next to it.

Spoiler Alert:  Finished snowflakes can be found on Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/JamieGobleBrocco

Supplies Needed

Supplies:

*Paper  (see https://youtu.be/ps9pKlHUlrg )

Paper Punch

Scissors

Optional Supplies:

Printer

Pencil

Paper Clips or Staples, for stabilizing paper while cutting or holding a pattern on top of a folded square of paper.

*Note:  The size of the starting square of paper is noted below each pattern.  If there is an 8.5″ below the pattern, it means that you need to start with an 8.5″ square of paper.

Tip:  Test your chosen paper by seeing if you can punch through twelve layers cleanly with a paper punch.  This will also give you an idea of how hard it will be on your hands and your tools.

Using the Patterns

If you haven't already, please go to the "How-to Fold" Tab at the top right to learn how to fold the paper for 6-Point Snowflakes.

How-to read the patterns

How-to use the patterns:

Option 1.  Cut out a triangular pattern from the pattern pages and place it on top of a folded paper.  Then cut through the pattern and folded paper at the same time.  Paper clips or staples may be used to hold the pattern in place. (Make sure to staple in an area that will be cut away.)

Option 2.  Use the pattern as a stencil by cutting away the shaded portion and tracing the design onto the folded paper.  This works well with patterns already used in Option 1.

Option 3.  Sketch the design, or parts of complex designs, onto the folded paper with a pencil.

Option 4.  Use the patterns for inspiration and a rough guide.  Some people are able to cut snowflakes freehand simply by looking at the patterns.

Relax!!!

Many factors affect the snowflakes: the thickness & texture of the paper, the tightness and preciseness of the folds, the sharpness of the scissors, the steadiness of hand, and even something as simple as whether or not the cuts are directly on the line or to one side of the line.

Don't be stressed if the snowflake is not an exact copy of the original; snowflakes are meant to be unique!

Left: All of the red snowflakes were made from the same pattern!  I purposefully exaggerated the borders and experimented with different cutting styles -- and it was fun!

Right:  All of the blue snowflakes on the right were made from the same pattern!  I purposefully exaggerated the borders and experimented with different cutting styles.  (One of the snowflakes was easily distorted:  you must leave at least one fold on each the long sides of the triangle, but I prefer to leave at least two.)

Group 1:  Simple Lines

Group 1 was created with simple scissor skills in mind.  All cuts can be made from the outside edge in to a point.

If you want to challenge yourself, you can practice cutting to the point and pausing to turn the paper before cutting back out.

Group 1, 8.5" Patterns:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sJ9WvcNKkAVQdib8jDfCEDMT1-WrpCXN/view?usp=sharing

Tip:  The centers of Pattern 2 & 5 in this group have very interesting centers.  You may want to try to cut them out in one piece.

Note:  Pattern 1 has an optional cut, shown as a red line.  From the very beginning, I want you to be thinking of changes that you can make to make the designs your own!  Remember, you must keep at least one fold on both the long sides of the triangle if you want the snowflake to stay together in one piece.

Group 2: Simple Curves

Group 2 was created to expand simple scissor skills by adding curves.  All cuts can be made from the outside edge in to a point.

If you want to challenge yourself, you can practice cutting to the point and pausing to turn the paper before cutting back out.

Note:  Group 2, Pattern 2 is a 2in1:  following the pattern will give you two snowflakes.

Group 8:  Punch Happy Snowflakes

Tip:  Make sure that the Paper Punches you choose are able to punch through twelve layers of paper.

The Punch Happy Tree is a great opportunity to be creative with Paper Punches – use whatever sizes and shapes you want!  Stars, snowflakes, a variety of circles . . . it’s up to you!
